Abstract

In April, 2008 a group of students from the University of Leicester went to Lake Bogoria in Kenya to see if they could apply scientific thinking to local problems of sustainability. Part of this study involved looking at a community fish pond project. During the research the assumption was made that the water outflow rate from the ponds was proportional to the inflow rate. This paper examines whether this is a reasonable assumption and based on approximate calculations concludes that this assumption holds provided that the surface area of the pond is small and the inlet flow rate is large.
