Abstract

This paper lays a theoretical framework for the application of shape memory alloys (SMA) to rocket nozzle design in order to maintain ideal expansion during ascent. We apply this framework to the Atlas V 401 1st stage, quantifying the non-linear relationship between the nozzle exit area and altitude of the rocket. The results establish a first look estimation into nozzle actuation rates needed, that future research can build from; specifically into material properties of a viable SMA.
