Abstract

We investigate the Darvaza crater, an open-air natural gas re located in Turkmenistan known
locally as the "Doorway to Hell". The energy released by the gas fire per day is estimated and
used to determine the total energy released by the gas fire over the lifetime of open air combustion. This is compared to the power requirements to the nation of Turkmenistan to demonstrate the benefits of harnessing this energy.
