Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.

  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

  • The text is double-spaced; uses an 11-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines below.

Author Guidelines

There are five sections to the journal: 

1.       Editorial and opinion pieces on policy issues

2.       Community Directions: This section will consist of short reports of innovations or developments in teaching. These should be written in an accessible style for a general audience. Short reports of conference presentations may be appropriate for this section.

 3.       Research Directions: This section will contain peer reviewed research articles on pedagogy and outreach in higher education. These articles should be directed towards evidence-based developments in teaching and learning and in the delivery of outreach. The journal will be pleased to receive reports of the preliminary findings of research subject to appropriate standards of scholarship.

4.      Pedagogic Direction: Reviews of topics in pedagogic research and innovative practice

5.      Book reviews: the journal will continue to publish reviews of books received.

Sections 1, 4 and 5 are usually by invitation but suggestions to the editor are welcome. Submissions to sections 2 and 3 are peer reviewed.

The editor (with the advice of the editorial board) will decide which section of the journal is most appropriate for submissions.

WORD LIMIT: The journal does not have a rigorous word limit for papers, but it is expected that papers for Community Directions will be less than around 2000 words and for Research directions less than around 4000 words. These are soft limits, not targets: shorter submissions are welcome. Supplementary materials are not allowed.

Authors proposing to submit significantly longer papers, or to submit review articles to the Pedagogic Directions section should discuss their proposals with the editor in advance. In any case, the editor is pleased to advise on prospective submissions.

Papers must be submitted using the article template.

References must use the Harvard style and DOIs must be provided for all cited works, where available.

The journal is open access and has no publication charges for authors. Articles in the journal are published under a CC-BY licence.

Privacy Statement

The data collected from registered and non-registered users of this journal falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to inform readers about the authorship and editing of content; it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviours, as well as tracking geopolitical and social elements of scholarly communication.

This journal’s editorial team uses this data to guide its work in publishing and improving this journal. Data that will assist in developing this publishing platform may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by this journal or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here. The authors published in this journal are responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported here.

Those involved in editing this journal seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.

Personal data is kept for as long as there is a relationship between the journal and the user. Users who want their personal data removed from the system should email the Editors.
