Abstract

This paper is a visual essay that examines a small collection of photographs taken by Gisèle Freund in 1932. The images capture the sociologist Norbert Elias and his contemporaries. The photographs serve as vital relational clues, documenting the intellectual life and personal networks of academic circles in the months leading up to the National Socialist rise to power in Germany. Rather than static objects, the argument offered here, adopting a more humanistic sociological analysis, suggests that these visual records are more than just historical artefacts; they represent dynamic figurations of a world on the brink of collapse.
