Notes on the Idea of a Nation
Abstract
The ‘idea of a nation’ is a more adequate analytical concept than ‘nationalism’. It is less ideological and more open to describe all variants in a state. To glorify the nation state, hardly taking into account the growth of inter-state and transnational interdependencies, cannot be durable. The nation state cannot be the final stage of development, though the established idea of the nation, including the European Union, is still taken for granted by the majority of populations in Europe.
