Abstract

The process by which homo sapiens became aware that he was human, and what that entailed, is an ongoing process. Various perspectives that can be used to tell this story: the rise of civilizations, the emergence of written languages, settled agricultural, and cities. If we look at science and technology, there is evidence of progress in the sense of humans gaining greater control over their environment. This article makes the case that progress has also occurred in the moral sphere, such as the abolition of plantation slavery, and increasing women’s rights. In short, this article proposes that we need to study long-term global processes and impending challenges in ‘Elias-like terms’: challenges that transcend national boundaries and require international and global solutions.
