P2_5_Self Supporting Space Elevator

Edward Carr, William Francis, James Harrison,

Abstract

The possibility to build a space elevator without a counterweight, by extending the cable beyond geostationary orbit, is identified and explored.  Calculations are made to indentify how long the cable would need to be to support its own weight.  This length is then compared to that of a short elevator leading to a counterweight at geostationary orbit
