Abstract


In this article we address the feasibility of using different gases in floatation bags used for marine salvage. Using the details of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald as a basis for the model we discovered that physically none of the gases were more applicable for use in this form of operation than the others, on the basis that the density of water is far greater than the density of gas. The minimum volume needed to raise the vessel was calculated to be 6.072x107m3. This article does not take into account economic factors of production or isolation of the gases.
